Vintage, likely midcentury re-print, woodblock pressing of "Fusui Gabo" (courtesan / Geisha) by artist Kitagawa Utamaro 1753-1806. Framed print.
Utamaro was a famous and leading artist of his time. He worked with the Ukiyo-e printing system in which multiple experts were involved (artist, publisher, carvers, etc). This is a "Bijin Okubi-e" (Large headed pictures of beautiful women). Utamaro is most famous for these 'large headed beauties'. He was also a member of the Katsukawa School- which popularized the dusting of mica in the background to produce a glittering effect.
The courtesan is a sassy lady with a finely coiffured hair style. She's adjusting an earring or that one start hair. I imagine she's looking in the mirror. Her kimono is expertly layered and has a chocolate color with a pink check.
This piece is a very high quality actual woodblock print. The lines are crisp and the colors are aligned. There is variation in the handmade paper with showing of lace like fibers along the edges and slight variations in thickness. There is a bleed-though in the back- which signifies an actual woodblock print and not a factory-printing. This one also has the mica application in the back which shimmers with the light.
Size: Print- 16" x 11.25"
Frame- 16.75" x 12.75" x 0.75"
Condition: Frame basic but ready to hang with wire. Print shows mild signs of handling and fine crinkles here and there. Several small age spots / paper toning but not on main subject of woman.
