Original village folk skirt in off-white homespun hemp or linen (my guess is hemp, as the fabric doesn’t really wrinkle). Fabric is quite thick and heavy.
Densely pleated at back, but flat in front where it would always be covered with an apron.
Hem area features horizontal pleat, black cross stitch embroidery, fagotting stitching, and black & white crochet edging. Front area of hem is less embellished, as it would mostly be covered.
Back of waistband is wider than front
Closes with ties
Combination of hand- and machine stitching
Place of Manufacture: Romania

Measurements, laid flat (in inches)

Condition: Fabric is very strong with no tears or weakening. There are occasional light marks, and one larger area on back of skirt with grayish marks, as shown—not sure what these are from, and I’ve not tried to launder the skirt. Former owner’s name in ink on inside of the waistband, a 1/2 inch stain on inside of waistband, and initials in ink on front of waistband. The front of the skirt near the hem has the remnants of some stitching, fagotting, and crochet work that doesn’t extend to the rest of the hem so I think that the frugal housewife reused parts of another piece to make this skirt.
