They are part of a series of stamps honoring the Purple Heart, the oldest military decoration in use, which was originally established by George Washington in 1782. The 2014 stamps feature a photograph by Ira Wexler of a Purple Heart medal awarded during World War II. These stamps have a nominal value of 49 cents at the time of issue, but as "Forever" stamps, they are always equal to the current First-Class Mail one-ounce rate. They were issued on October 11, 2014, in Dover, Delaware
