mygoodvibetribe @mesaprano You are doing beautiful and selfless work. I applaud you for what you do as I know it takes courage, kindness and a lot of patience! Karma is real and I believe you (already) are or will be blessed for the rest of your days. 😊 My husband used to work with mentally and physically challenged teens (Down syndrome, Aspergers disease, schizophrenia + more) that were in a program after graduating from high school to help them prepare for the 'real world'.... This program included teaching them how to do laundry, cleaning, cooking, learning how to take public transportation, helping them find and keep a job or internship. It was beautiful to see how much the 'kids' loved and looked up to him! Unfortunately, bc the program was run based on taxes from the town, they had to reduce almost all of the employees in the program. My husband was affected by this and sadly got laid off. I had never seen him so heartbroken as he too loved his kids and his work. He said it was so rewarding everyday by just being able to make one of them smile at least once during his day. The entire thing was especially so upsetting bc the town he was working in is one of the healthiest towns in NJ. The parents (the majority BUT not all) took their kids there everyday to basically "quote on quote, 'have a relaxing day' ".... Seriously???! Can you believe it?! It was beyond heartbreaking to see these kids get dropped, saddened, as they knew or could feel their parents frustration with them. But they loved going to their daily program. They used to tell my husband (he was the only male working there) that they loved him, the girls had crushes on him, they all smiled instantly when they saw him. It was adorable to witness! But it was heartbreaking when it came to an end like it did - especially since the parents in this town are beyond rich and have the means to help keep all staff on. There were 20 kids and 5 teachers/staff. Now there are 18 kids and 2 teachers! Doesn't even seem legal if you ask me. These teens can have outbursts and get violent and become physical. To this day I still cannot figure out why they eliminated his position, he was the last one hired so we always thought it could have been that- guess we will never know. Phew that was long- sorry about that. I guess I just feel his passion and was able to relate to your story. God bless you love! 💜

As a local and global responder I have had the opportunity to see people put I to the worst possible circumstances and with the help and love of people like you their circumstances are able to transform into a story of triumph over tragedy 💋

mesaprano @65ds_do_it_btr: What is a DAT team? How do you become a responder? My husband has done this type of volunteering in the past, before me. We've only been married 2 years💕 He went to Haiti right after the earth quake to help rebuild a school and an orphanage. He still wants to continue doing this. Maybe you can guide us in the right direction to help?

platinummermaid @mesaprano Kathy I will be happy to help. DAT stands for disaster action team. It is the emergency disaster response wing of the Red Cross. Within Each chapter there are a number of teams for response; logistics, sheltering, feeding, DAT. In order to serve with the red cross you need to locate your local chapter. Most chapters have an online orientation, if you chapter does not they should be able to tell you the next time they offer orientation. You cannot proceed further without that complete and the criminal background check. After that you will be assigned a field. If you want DAT it will be DAT you will have to start training for your DAT team. They often offer what are called super Saturday classes where you can become certified for a number of things in one day. Your DAT captain will have your assigned weeks to be on call. When you are on all you can be called at anytime day or night to respond to anything from a house fire to a large scale disaster. It is all volunteer. It is a wonderful institution. I just turned down the position of Emergency Services Director for 7 counties in my state. I can't do the mandatory 2 week deployment commitment with my children being so young and no on the fly child care waiting in the wings. I will do all I can to help you out!

I have a traumatic brain injury. I used to do my job so I could do what I could so that your kids had access to health care. It frustrates me I can no longer think or do what I used to do.
