These Javanese Masks were and still are used in Topeng performances in Indonesia. This particular mask is from Java and depicts a spirit. I purchased it at a local night market outside of Surabaya, East Java back in the 1980s.
Made of a soft tropical wood. It is carved to fit over one's face.
