This is a beautiful and heavy duty (strong) wood bucket made of wood staves and tole painted in mid century U.S. Many call such buckets a firkin, which is also also a unit of measure, but this bucket is way oversized for a firkin unit of measure. (It's funny how the meaning of words change over time -- beer or ale were sold in "firkins" in Europe hundreds of years ago, and these types of buckets were handmade for carrying these partial barrels, or a firkin, of ale). The same type buckets have been made over the past couple hundred years and the buckets are called "firkins" but no longer stick to the original unit of measure. This bucket is MUCH larger than one from hundreds of years ago that was used to hold a firkin of ale. :) As you can see from the photos, it is in EXCELLENT condition for its age. It has more wood wraps around it than most firkins, and the thicknes (about 5/8") of each wood stave used to form the bucket is larger than most firkins. The lid fits firmly and the handle is securely fastened by wood pegs, and swings like it should. From the looks of the inside of the firkin, it has never been used. I have no idea why part of its decoration includes the word "charcoal." Because of POSH's shipping policy shipping costs are tiny compared wth what it would cost to ship otherwise, but I will have to pay a little on my end since it is over POSH's weight limit. **Beautiful handcrafted treasure in EXCELLENT condition!
