This is a sensationally beautiful natural straw hat from the early 1940s'! The crown is short, oval and flat at the top, and is surrounded by a wide brim which is edged in a brown grosgrain band. There is a darker brown band around the crown which ends in a bow at the back. The hat is entirely covered with beautiful brown veiling. There is a grosgrain and elastic "o" ring band attached to the inside of the hat to keep it in a. tilted position. Tilt hats were popular in the 1930s and 1940s. They were worn at an angle and held to the back of the head by a strap, rigid ring, elastic band beneath the hair, an extended cap, or a combination of these. 30s Fashion certainly seemed fussier than the 1920s with its relentless ornaments of bows, trims and frills.
