Antique Nevers French Faience Plate Antoine Montagnon.
This lovely Late 19th Century Antique French Faience Dish was potted by Antoine Montagnon of Nevers and bears his monogram in blue within a ribbon cartouche underside. Hand-Painted in classic French colors & still vibrant retaining all its original provincial charm.
Faience is made from earthenware clay that is coated with a tin-based glaze. The glaze gives the faience a white or colored surface, which is decorated with painted designs. Faience is fired at lower temperatures than porcelain, resulting in a less hard & durable material.
Antoine Montagnon established a Faience earthenware factory in Nevers, France producing work from 1875-2015. This type of work began in 1648, w/ Majolica Italian influence.
The plate itself is imperfect with some fritting on scalloped edge. The back of course has the Maker’s Mark, can see wall hanging holder marks.
No chips, cracks or fading.
