Urushibara Mokuchu was born in 1888 with the given name of Yoshijiro in Tokyo. He had studied woodblock printmaking. As a young man he had the chance to go to London with a group of craftsmen for demonstrations of the Japanese 'mokuhanga' technique at the occasion of a British-Japanese exhibition in 1910. Exhibitions of Japanese handicraft and art products in Europe and the USA were systematically supported by the Meiji government as part of the efforts to modernize the country and promote exports of Japanese goods.
The artist remained in London and in Paris until 1934. He had received commissions for restoration and reproduction works of mainly Chinese artefacts for the British Museum. And he created own woodblock prints as a freelance artist. He is said to have been rather influential on European printmakers. With his skill in woodblock printmaking he often took commissions for carving and printing from other artists based on watercolor or other sketches - in the best tradition of Japanese printmaking. His carving and printing skills were highly praised by his European artist friends.
At some time during his stay in Europe he assumed the artist name Mokuchu. After world war II prints by Urushibara Mokuchu were exhibited in the USA.
