This listing is for likely a mid-later 20th century Redware Chamber Stick style Candle Holder with finger loop holder from an unknown artisan pottery studio. The candle holder is surely handcrafted, hand thrown… (we are not up on the lingo!)
It is signed on the bottom, but mostly illegibly. You can make out the word “pottery” - which is impressed into the underside/base.
You can see the red clay (?) on the bottom, with the beautiful color everywhere except the base (again, we do not know the correct lingo here!) The color beautifully picks up the light differently depending on where it sits. For example, it looks almost pewter, but then a steel blue/steel gray under different lighting conditions. Graphite? Gunmetal gray? Truly depends on the play of the light.
Condition is very good! You can see there are some scratches on the bottom/base where it rests on a dresser. The pottery piece itself shows no cracks or breaks. I see no chips. At the mouth where the candle would be placed, there is the teeny tiniest of a dot. I think that might be a hint of the redware peeking through. Possibly a speck or a flake missing the color. See pix.
It was dusty, so we gave it a light wipe with a tissue. Used no water or anything. Leaving that up to the new owner!!
A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF HANDCRAFTED POTTERY
