Zara is a clothing retailer that was founded in 1975 by Amancio Ortega and Rosalía Mera in A Coruña, Spain:
Early years
Ortega started his business in the clothing industry in the 1960s, making clothes at home with his wife. In 1975, they opened their first store, Zara, which sold low-priced lookalikes of popular, higher-end clothing. The name Zara was chosen because Ortega's preferred name, Zorba, was already taken.
Expansion
Zara expanded rapidly in the following years, opening more stores in Spain and establishing its first garment factories and company headquarters. In 1985, Inditex was incorporated as the parent company for Zara.
International expansion
Zara began expanding internationally in the 1980s, opening its first store outside of Spain in Portugal in 1988. It went on to open stores in New York, Paris, Mexico City, Athens, Belgium, Sweden, Malta, Cyprus, Norway, and Israel.
