Beautiful condition, large, rare mid-century Dutch vase with lid in classic Delft style, by Royal Tichelaar Makkum (Netherlands). Founded in 1572, Royal Tichelaar is the oldest company in the Netherlands and the only remaining Dutch producer of traditionally crafted Delftware.
The underside bears the Tichelaar company mark, and beside it, the initials of mid-century master painter Cor Bekema, whose work is known for its craftsmanship and adherence to the traditional styles of Tichelaar Makkum.
Royal Tichelaar Makkum is renowned for traditional tin-glazed earthenware techniques, especially in its polychrome pieces. In tin glazing, the ceramic is bisque-fired before tin oxide glaze is applied. The glaze’s white surface creates a smooth surface for colorful overglaze painting before the second firing fuses the glaze and the hand painting, resulting in a smooth and glossy white background.
The piece is in great vintage condition. Please see all photos. There is a 3mm glaze chip on the very top of the rim and a 4mm glaze chip on a blue petal. Glaze only—the ceramic is not chipped or damaged in any way.
The piece is 20” tall with lid. It is painted in traditional Delft polychrome—blue, green, red. It features four cartouches of florals and birds with Delft style ornaments. The lid follows this style with a Delft-interpreted majolica Chinoiserie foo dog finial. The interiors of both base and lid are fully glazed.
