The U9 was built by Howaldtswerke in Kiel for the German Navy and entered service in 1966. It is 45m long, 4.6m wide and has a draft of 4m. It is powered by two diesel generators and an electric motor. The U9 achieved a maximum of 10 knots above water and 17 knots under water. At the most fuel-efficient speed of 5 knots, the boat had a range of 4,177 nautical miles; at 11 knots, it only managed 1,300 nautical miles. The nominal diving depth was 100m. Today you can view the U9 in the Speyer Technology Museum. The colossus of 466 tons was transported across the North Sea and the Rhine. The last few kilometers on land were the most difficult. Three tractors with a total of 1,500 hp were necessary to move the U9 on a total of 160 wheels.
