Wooden Textile Printing Block – India – Early 20th Century – Missing Handle
~ Condition: Antique; missing handle; age-appropriate wear from use
~ Material: Hand-carved hardwood
~ Color: Natural aged brown wood
~ Measurements: 6″ × 3.5″ × 2″
~ Weight: Solid carved block
~ Overview:
This early 20th-century wooden textile block from India was traditionally used for block printing, a centuries-old method of stamping patterns onto fabric. Hand-carved from a single piece of hardwood, the raised design would be dipped in dye or ink and pressed repeatedly onto cloth to create intricate repeating motifs.
Despite the missing handle, the carved pattern is well preserved and beautifully represents the craftsmanship of India’s textile artisans. These blocks were commonly used to produce saris, shawls, and decorative linens, and today they make excellent collectibles, display art, or tools for modern printmakers.
