This handcrafted wooden Sankofa bird sculpture features a splatter of red and green accents. A captivating art piece that will add a unique touch of nature indoors. A perfect addition to your home art collection. Preowned. Approximately 9.5” high.
The concept of Sankofa originated from the Akan tribe in Ghana (West Africa), where it translates to "it is not forbidden to retrieve what may have been left behind." Some interpret this as we can always go make and make amends for our mistakes. It is a combination of three words - SAN (return), KO (go), and FA (seek, look, and take) - and is represented by a legendary mythical bird that looks forward while its feet face back. The Akan people believe in learning from the past to plan for the future, and understand that continuing to move forward while remembering one's roots is essential for growth and progress.
