White Buffalo Turquoise, while often referred to as a type of turquoise, is actually a distinct mineral, primarily composed of magnesite and alumite, with its unique coloring due to calcite. The stone is not turquoise, despite its resemblance and hardness, and is found primarily in the Dry Creek Mine in Tonopah, Nevada, according to Turquoise Moose.
The Otteson family, a family with a long history in turquoise mining, discovered the White Buffalo stone in the Dry Creek Mine in Tonopah, Nevada in 1993 according to Turquoise & Co.
Due to its veiny appearance, which is similar to classic turquoise, they initially believed it to be a variation of turquoise.
The name
"White Buffalo" originates from a Native
American legend about a rare white buffalo, a symbol of spiritual purity and abundance.
The Ottesons, due to their extensive experience in the turquoise industry, coined the name "White Buffalo Turquoise" to market the stone. While they often refer to it simply as "White Buffalo" when selling, the name has become widely used in the industry.
The black and brown chert (flint-like rock) that surrounds the white stone creates beautiful patterns, sometimes including the rare "spiderweb" matrix.
The stone is found in veins within the black chert host rock, similar to how turquoise is found
