The discovery of King Tuts tomb in 1922 led to an explosion in Egyptian motifs. Sometimes considered part of the Deco movement, it's influence can be seen in architecture, furniture, art, fashion, and jewelry. This modern revival lasted into the 1960's. The 1963 film Cleopatra, widely considered a flop, brought the curtain down . Other revivals occurred in the late 1700's and mid 1800's with similar results. (Cleopatra - by Edward Mason Eggleston, 1920's)

rangerric @janadenae We've always had a fascination with history... especially when we make some discovery, and that "history" becomes something we can see and touch... Aztec, Mayan, Chinese, Celtic, Greek, & Roman... all have had their influence.

wayfaringcloset @rangerric same here! I’m obsessed with your posts , so fun to read those & see the example pics. Byzantine is my favorite! Once I got a dating jewelry book at the library that was about 3 inches thick- 5 hours later! 😂

gypseableu27 @rangerric actually Cleopatra was dark in complexion, as were the Indigenous Egyptian people.. and the movie with Elizabeth Taylor was cultural appropriation.. black face with Hollywood was very common back in the day, hence why there were white actors constantly playing people of color.. if you Google for the most recent articles on DNA with Egyptian people, they werent white.

rangerric @bohobeach27 I did say the move was a "flop" ... and my post really had nothing to do with Hollywood... but thanks anyway...

gypseableu27 @rangerric i was mostly referring to this artists white version of Cleopatra, which is inaccurate. yet given the year this was painted, its no surprise because people of color werent represented as beautiful historical figures, due to segregation. being Taino (Native American) i come across history being often white washed when it comes to people of color, this painting is a prime example of that. youre welcome. 😊

rangerric @bohobeach27 I understand and appreciate all your saying.. and agree.. just trying to give some background context to the "Egyptian Revival" movement (which certainly had it's faults) but still produced some lovely jewelry... And the painting, while historically inaccurate, can still be appreciated.

rangerric @bohobeach27 Thank you for that... trust me, I would love to write a 5000 word essay on each of these topics, but space limits what they are that's impossible... so my little notes are woefully simplistic... but hopefully appropriate to the purpose and audience... not disrespect or slight intended,,,

kyetaka My grandma had a 18k Egyptian revival necklace that I adored. It got stolen from her, alas, but I’m forever going to be on the hunt for one like it. Lord help me if I ever find it, cuz the budget will be busted, for sure!

lameyclimber I really love that you explain the differences between what influenced jewelry design throughout the years! It’s something I’ve been working on for my blog. It’s such a good idea to have mini posts on it!! 🧡
