This hand-blown glass ornament marked “West Germany” dates between 1949 and 1990, when the country was divided after World War II. Before the split, most ornaments were made in Lauscha, the birthplace of glass Christmas decorations, but after it fell under Soviet control, many artisans fled west to rebuild their craft in Bavaria and Hesse. These glassblowers used traditional Lauscha techniques with interior silvering, lacquer, and hand-applied glitter, and exported their work to the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, fueling a booming holiday trade that symbolized postwar optimism and recovery. Factories such as Inge-Glas and Kugel Kompanie flourished during this time, marking their ornaments “West Germany” to distinguish them from Eastern production. When Germany reunified in 1990, that marking disappeared, making these ornaments valuable historical reminders of craftsmanship, resilience, and a nation finding its way back together.
