Ladies, never ignore signs of heart problems! I had open heart surgery on Christmas day 2012....after a dumb neurologist told me my stroke was all in "my head"....so often women are perceived differently by physicians....if I had not been an RN, I would have died. BE YOUR OWN ADVOCATE!!!

Hi! 1st congrats on making it thru a horrible ordeal on every level! That's amazing. Most people aren't nurses or have the training to know when something is seriously wrong, then pay a hefty price later. I feel your sentiment as I have had more surgeries than I can count w/my last 1 just a few days ago. Because this all started for me 25yrs ago & has progressively got worse from degenerative issues, more injuries & misdiagnosis causing more new health issues of many kinds.

CONT; I was always blown off/misdiagnosed only to find out later I was right about what was happening to me. This stuff makes me sick! Some people should NOT be allowed to be doctors! And, w/the way things are now w/the govnmt & other leaders who have zero idea what it's like to live w/chronic health/pain/physical issues 24-7 & dictating the treatment we need. Sorry 4 the rant, I hate hearing this stuff. I Hope you're doing well now, enjoying the almost summer!

I just had to comment on this post of urs... in 2011 the upper right chamber of my hear deside to stop working, lucky my husband sent me to the hospital and I was rushed into surgery for a pacemaker. 3 weeks later my lower right chamber had stoped too, but my doc was smart enough to know this might happen so the lead was already in place. I had been having signs something was wrong for YEARS!!!

My doc had described it as a car that makes a strange noise, but goes away when u take it to the mechanic. It's not until the part completely breaks before ur mechanic knows what it is and can fix it. I now go to my doc every 6 months to make sure my pacemaker is doing ok and how much battery life it has. Being a nurse u probably understand all of this.

Even though this happened 7 years ago, it's still had to wrap my head around the idea that a computer is the only thing keeping me alive. That is just strange to me, ya know? A computer the size of a half dollar coin is the only thing that keeps me alive everyday. Strange🤔😜 Anyway, thank u for letting me share this with u. It really helps to talk about it, I'm sure u understand..... nurse's r the BEST at listening and helping us understand and deal with stuff.

monicasvanity
@mrsjocannon what were your signs that something was wrong?
Aug 08Reply

lvntwelve
@monicasvanity I was born with a congenital heart problem that went undiagnosed until
I was 40....2 heart attacks and 3 strokes later they found it and fixed it on Christmas Day 2012...
Aug 08Reply

monicasvanity
@lvntwelve Oh my! I’m so sorry but also glad they finally figured it out ❤️
Aug 08Reply

mrsjocannon
@monicasvanity ... my first sign was the last 2 toes and top of my foot under thoes toes on my left foot, I couldn't feel anymore. I once took 2 nails and put them in the same spot on each foot and pushed until it hurt, my right foot I stoped right away, but when I stoped pushing on my left foot the nail was stuck in my foot.
Aug 08Reply

mrsjocannon
@monicasvanity ... then I was sleeping ALL the time! On the weekends I would be lucky if I was awake for 3 hour's a day! I would even fall asleep while I was driving! All of this went on for over a year if u can believe that! The last straw was when I started swelling. On the 3rd day I was so swollen I looked 6 months pregnant! I drove to the hospital and theyasked if my heart rate was always so low
Aug 08Reply

mrsjocannon
@monicasvanity ... I had NO IDEA how low it was, I just wanted to go back to sleep! But my nurse wouldn't let me, finally when the doc came in to tell me they were transferring me to another hospital for pacemaker surgery, I was shocked, confused and mad. My doc looked at the monitor and said that was the highest my heart rate had been since I got there, I looked and it was 35 beats per minute.
Aug 08Reply

mrsjocannon
@monicasvanity ... when I was transferred I was at 22 beats a minute, at 21 u go into cardiac arrest. I rode to the other hospital with a giant needle between my feet full of adrenalin incase my heart rate dropped. It was not fun😜
Aug 08Reply

mrsjocannon
@monicasvanity .... out of curiosity what makes u ask? What's going on with u?.....
Aug 08Reply

monicasvanity
@mrsjocannon Awful awful!! I’ve been feeling irregular heartbeats but aren’t sure if it simply in my head. 🥴
Aug 08Reply

lvntwelve
@monicasvanity it is not in your head!!! Find a dr that can get by the fact you have a vagina and get some answers!
Aug 09Reply

lvntwelve
@mrsjocannon MEN! Male doctors seem to blow females off...
Aug 09Reply

mrsjocannon
@monicasvanity .... I had an irregular heart beat my WHOLE life too. My heart would beat twice then pause, beat 3 times then pause, etc, etc, etc,..... So everytime I had surgery and the cardiologists would do a heart check they would always get confused until I told them my heart had always been irregular. My mom was the same way we think it's hereditary because of her mom too, my grandma.
Aug 09Reply

mrsjocannon
@monicasvanity .... honestly, I would get checked. Keep seeing a different cardiologist until someone FINALLY listens to u. I had heart stress tests sooooooo MANY times!!! And all the test would show way my irregular beat. But also... heart palpitations can be related to anxiety and panic attacks. I have high functioning anxiety, which means I'm always on the verge of a panic attack, even when I'm sleeping. I've had that my whole life too.
Aug 09Reply

mrsjocannon
@monicasvanity ....but regardless of my advice and my symptoms, take what ur feeling VERY SERIOUSLY!... and see ur primary doc and if u don't like the 1st cardiologist then go to another, and another, and another! And do ur homework! Find out who is the most highly recommended and the best, most through in ur area and get an appointment with him. I was lucky, my cardiologist is rated best in the state and was on call the day my heart finally quit. Dr. Crandall at IMC Hospital here in Utah.

I can very much related to your experience. I had ovarian cancer and for six months the Dr. told me it was all in my head. I had to insist she “opened” me up to find out what was wrong.
Long story short, uterus and ovaries were removed... can’t never have kids ;-(
Good News: I survived
Fight on, sister!

You're still here for a reason! My husband had open heart surgery 6 years ago. He was in the ER over Easter and he's been having problems again since then. Hang in there, my friend, you have many happy years ahead yet. Wishing you all the best. Alison

O’h m’gosh! I am so glad you made it! I had SCAD in 2016 when no one seemed to know what it is. I survived 4 heart attacks in 4 months. And I am still trying to spread the word as it’s mostly women - some very young - who have these dissections. Stay 💪!
