This vintage Kutani ware Sake Set from Japan features a beautifully crafted Tokkuri, or sake bottle, and 4 small lithophane Ochoko cups. Manufactured mostly for export from the 1930s until the 1960s.
The gold bird on the top of the tokkuri will sing when the carafe is tipped to pour. The hexagonal bottle was skillfully hand painted. The Japanese symbols on the bottom of the Tokkuri translate to Kutani. Kutani ware, Japanese porcelain has been made in Kaga province (now in Ishikawa prefecture) since the 1600s.
The 4 matching small Sake cups feature the same hand painted design, they are also lithophane. A lovely image of a Geisha appears when the cups are held to a light source.
The Tokkuri measures 6" high x 2 1/2" wide and 2 1/2" deep. the Ochoko are 1 3/4" tall and have a 1 5/8" diameter. The set is in very good vintage condition as shown by the photos.
