Overview:
Unique vintage Harley-Davidson letterman/varsity sweater made by Sand-Knit / Medalist. Cream/off-white knit with large chenille A patch on front incorporating a football, roaring cat/tiger patch on the sleeve, 3-stripe arm detailing, ribbed hem and cuffs, and a hand-stitched name Duke Chandler inside bottom of the sweater. A rare small-run/custom piece likely produced for a club, team, or person tied to motorcycle culture.
Sand-Knit (later part of Medalist) manufactured custom letterman and award sweaters from the 1920s through the mid-20th century; their work was commonly used for small runs, clubs, and team garments. Based on the tag and construction, a mid-20th century (approx. 1950s1970s) production date is a reasonable estimate.
Provenance note:
The sewn name Duke Chandler matches the name of David Duke Chandler (husband of Debra Tiger Chandler, a recognized motorcycle advocate and Sturgis Motorcycle Museum honoree). This increases the possibility the sweater has direct motorcycle-scene provenance; however, I cannot confirm this sweater belonged to that specific person without additional provenance (photos, estate documentation, or direct confirmation).
Condition:
Good vintage condition with light age-toning spots consistent with wear. No large holes or major stains visible; please examine photos for wear at seams/cuffs and message with any questions. Some discoloration noted on the "A" as well.
