Bohemian cobalt blue glass, known for its rich, deep blue hue, has a history deeply intertwined with the development of glassmaking in the Bohemian region (now part of the Czech Republic). While cobalt has been used as a pigment in glass since ancient times, its widespread use in Bohemia for decorative glassware began in the 16th century. Bohemian glassmakers, particularly those in the Schurer family, experimented with cobalt oxide, quartz, and potassium carbonate to create a vibrant blue color. This led to the production of various cobalt blue glass objects, including goblets, vases, and decorative pieces, which became highly sought after throughout Europe and beyond.
Bohemian cobalt blue glass remains highly valued by collectors and is still produced today, showcasing the enduring appeal of this distinctive color.
