Vintage cast iron spider candlestick holder by Jens Quistgaard for Dansk Design

Designed by Jens Harald Quistgaard (HQ) for DANSK DESIGNS in 1962, the SPIDER candlestick is a sculptural and aesthetically highly pleasing mid-century Danish modern design marvels in their own right. Originally produced by DANSK in Denmark, they were marketed all over the world, and also inspired the manufacturing of competing brands across the planet. Thus the SPIDER and many interpretations of its design can still be found at secondhand markets and in vintage stores to this day - however the SPIDER is the original. While the name obviously does hint at its resemblance to a spider, Quistgaard has stated that initial inspiration for this design was found in a dandelion, in its 'pappus state', which he observed floating in creek. This state is when the flower develops into seed heads, and each seed is attached to a characteristic fuzzy structure called a pappus that allows the seeds to be carried by the wind.
