Vintage Circa 1805 Antique Admiral Nelson Captain Berry Prattware Tankard Pitcher Mug Staffordshire Sunderland England 19th Century Leeds
Measures roughly 5" tall, 5" deep (this includes handle), 4" wide at belly, and 2 3/8" diameter at base.
A fine Prattware commemorative relief moulded pottery pitcher with images of Admiral Nelson and Captain Berry. The striking defined decoration is further enhanced with war ships firing cannons. This piece is an early 19th century example in uderglaze oxides and pearlware glaze. In 1805 at Trafalger Berry was captain of the ‘Agamemnon’. Note- When King George remarked upon the loss of Nelson’s right arm, he wittily replied, indicating Berry, “But not my right hand, your majesty”.
This was purchased in the late 1980s or early 1990s from a dealer in London. Please note it has a very fine hairline crack which looks have been fixed with some kind of translucent yellow glue (I'm not sure if this qualifies as "restoration," but it needs to be mentioned). Sold as pictured.
