a set of vintage "U.S.A. Chiffon" ballpoint pens and their original box. The pens are blue with blue caps eraser tips and blue ink, and each has the inscription "U.S.A. CHIFFON Medium 49¢." The box is orange, green, and white, with the text "chiffon BALL PENS A PROUD PRODUCT OF AMERICAN TECHNOLOGY," and it also states "FULLY GUARANTEED NON-LEAKING NON-SMUDGING CARBIDE BALL" and "MANUFACTURED EXCLUSIVELY BY BEROL U.S.A. FOR CHIFFON CARBON & RIBBON CO." These pens appear to be from a time when products proudly displayed their American origin and offered guarantees of quality. The "49¢" likely indicates their original price point
Berol, originally the Eagle Pencil Company founded in New York City in 1856, later became part of the Berol Corporation in 1969. That same year, Eagle Pencil Co. merged with Berol. In 1986, Berol was acquired by Empire, which was subsequently purchased by Sanford in 1995. Sanford became a division of Newell Rubbermaid (now Newell Brands) in 1992. Berol was known for supplying the BBC with pens and markers in the 1980s. The company also produced pencils, including the Eagle line and Prismacolor colored pencils.
