Vintage Sgraffito style pottery mug
Features a panoramic scene of an archer hunting a deer in a forest
It has a very Paleolithic, cave art vibe
Sgraffito derives from the Italian word sgraffiare, which means "to scratch"
The sgraffito design is created by removing clay as a piece dries to create an artistic pattern or design
This style has a long history and was used in many art forms, including building facades, before being adopted by potters
It became popular in Italy during the Renaissance
This 20th century piece is a prime example of deep sgraffito, clearly showing the excise marks used to create the design
Very well crafted with multiple layers of glaze highlighting the artwork
The rim, handle and interior of the mug are finished in a rich combination of blues with darker accents, the effect is almost like a midnight sky in the forest
The finishing touch is a deer hoof print inside the mug
Signed by the artist on the bottom
Measures approx 3 5/8” tall
Nice vintage condition with age appropriate wear, no chips, cracks or repairs
It is unused and still has an original sticker that reads Mar. 1993 on the rim
Please note I pack all fragile items in tissue paper and newsprint for secure shipping
