Vintage - Set of 4- Japanese Somayaki Hashirigoma Pottery Cups These are Pre-Owned and in excellent vintage condition. This is an immensely beautiful set of cups made in Japan with Somaware technique. Are in beautiful combination of olive green/green/brown colors and has a cracked look. The lower half borders have been designed with heart shaped cut-outs and looks great. Somaware is known for its double-walled construction. The inner and outer pieces are thrown separately by the potter and allowed to dry and firm for a short period of time. The inner piece is then joined with the outer piece. This design not only keeps the liquid inside hot, but also the outer surface cool, allowing one to easily hold the cup. Some of the cups has a "hashiri-uma" or galloping horse motif and for some has fazed out due to use. This motif is said to have been requested by a feudal lord in the mid -1600's to show pride in the region's ability to breed and train quality horses. Perfect addition for your kitchenware or a gift for someone you know will love these. Measures approx. 3" tall, 3 1/4" diameter, 2" base diameter and weighs .53 lb each.
