This wonderful, almost antique, fan motif patchwork quilt is likely from the 1930s, possibly 40s. Made from a swell collection of 1920s and 30s cotton fabrics (including calicos and feedsacks) in lots of pink, purple, green and yellow. And expertly hand sewn and quilted with the tiniest stitches (seen in the tape montage)--the perfect stitching on the red binding along the perfectly scalloped edge must have taken her forever.
It's in really good condition wear wise, with the white just a little mellowed. And the back has some staining in the upper left corner (left side of back photo 1), but the rest is in good condition, with just a few other light issues. But notice that there is green bleeding in some of the yellow centers. The darkest is shown in the tape montage (located one fan in from the bottom right of the full quilt photo). There are 14 out of the 30 fans with this issue, though all the rest are much lighter to barely seeable.
I imagine the reaction of the woman who did all this meticulous work the first time it was washed and this happened. But then became part of the decades long history of this beautiful piece of mid-20th-century textile folk art in search of the next person to love it anyway.
