This box is an antique Flemish Art Company pyrography box, dating from approximately the late 1890s to the 1920s. This style, commonly known as "pyrography" or "pokerwork," involves burning decorative designs into wood using heated Historical Context Manufacturer: The Flemish Art Company of Brooklyn, New York, was the leading supplier of wood-burning kits and pre-stamped wood "blanks" during the turn of the 20th century. Their success was so significant that "Flemish Art" became a generic term for the craft itself.Original Purpose: While often used as trinket or jewelry boxes today, these were originally sold for specific storage needs such as gloves, handkerchiefs, collars, cuffs, or neckties. Design & Material: Most were made from light-colored, soft woods like basswood (linden), which were ideal for wood burning. Common motifs included Art Nouveau florals, grapes, and occasionally portraits. The box is approximately 10 3/4 inches wide and 5 3/4 inches tall and 9.5 inches wide. Its in vintage good condition and ready to store new stuff.
