Jacob Zook began making Pennsylvania Dutch hex signs in 1942 in Paradise, Pennsylvania in a vintage Amish souvenir shop. Growing up in Pennsylvania, although we were not Amish, we had hex signs on our shed and in the house. We also used them as trivets or wall hangings, especially in the kitchen.
This hex sign is 7.5” in diameter, has a hole in the center for wall hanging, and is probably from the 1970s when I was growing up. There’s some slight wear on the edges, but the graphics are in excellent condition. This item is from my parent’s estate.
Has double Distelfinks (means birds in German) for good luck and happiness. Hearts are for love. Plants are for growth. Specific colors also had meaning—red for your emotions, yellow for love of man and the sun, green for growing things, blue for protection, white for purity, and brown for Mother Earth. The sign is wooden.
You can still find hex signs in tourist shops, but this is a vintage souvenir with some history to it and love on it. Clean. Condition is very good to excellent pre-loved. No smoking home.
