I so wanted this to work but it's just a smidge too snug in the chest. This vintage cardigan is in *pristine* condition. The fabric is immaculate and drapes beautifully. Colors are strikingly vivid. Just an absolute gem and a testament to the quality and longevity of Pendleton knit wear.
The gold-on-white Pendleton tag with the Portland, Oregon text and the phrase “Pure Virgin Wool” is consistent with the 1960s–early 1970s manufacturing period. Earlier tags (1940s–50s) used blockier fonts and “Trade Mark Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.” without the word “Woolen Mills.” Later 1970s versions shifted to navy or brown tags with more modern type.
You're looking at a mid-century Pendleton from the tail end of their postwar golden age — when all production was still domestic, and dyes were done in-house at the Oregon mill.
Material: Dense, high-twist virgin wool, soft yet resilient. These cardigans were engineered to be both smart casualwear and lodgewear.
Pattern: The plaid is not printed but woven using color blocking techniques derived from Pendleton’s blanket weaving heritage.
Buttons: Original mid-century Pendleton cardigans often used color-matched or slightly marbled resin buttons (blue ones are era-correct).
Fit: Straight, slightly boxy torso, high armhole typical of 1960s knits.
Reposhing this item I purchased from @flowersbywillow. Loved it, but ready to rotate for something new.
