Navy Blue 100% Wool Felt Wide Brim Ladies' Dress Hat made by Mr. John for Geo. O. Bollman & Co., Inc. (hat company founded in 1868) "Excello ~ Made in USA ~ 100% wool" stamped in white ink at the center of the interior crown The interior crown edge is lined with black grosgrain ribbon Large satin navy blue bow is sewn onto the side The brim of this hat is formed so that it tilts slightly upward on each side The crown is formed asymmetrical to dip/lean into the bow portion. Thin neck strap is attached Original string which presumably held the original price tag is still attached (final photo) A white, red and blue fabric label with black embroidered text reading "New York" "Paris" "Mr. John Classic" is sewn at the intrerior center back crown. Mr John’s hats were known for their elegance and glamour and he was a popular cultural figure. His work adorned the cover of Vogue in 1943, 1944, 1946 and 1953. Over his career, he dressed the heads of stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Lauren Bacall, Gloria Vanderbilt and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Mr John won numerous awards in his career including the Coty American Fashion Critics Award in 1943, the Neiman-Marcus Award in 1950 and the Millinery Institute of America Award in 1956.
