This beautiful cream colored jacket is made of wool felt material with red cross-stitching around the collar, front, bottom, cuffs, and pockets. The inside is lined with red rayon, I believe. This unknown embroiderer was highly skilled, recreating the images that were incorporated into the pattern. The images feature whimsical and tranquil ideals of villagers and their lives as well as the flora and fauna of Mexico.
I cannot imagine the amount of time that was spent on creating this jacket. It is in pristine condition surviving decades of existence without damage. This jacket is in marvelous condition with no holes, stains, or missing threads, and the embroidery is incredible. These jackets, meant to be worn open, always look great with jeans, skirts, and especially, with the vintage Mexican circle skirts.
Whimsical images hand-embroidered onto colorful, woolen jackets made in Mexico depicted idealized everyday Mexican village life and culture. From 1947-1952 McCall Needlework promoted sewing patterns for Mexican jackets with similar images that captured the travel spirit: “Take a trip to Mexico via your needle!” read one advertisement.
