Intricate traditional Mola/Molas panel made by Guna/Kuna women of Panama. Stunning detail, colors, and craftsmanship. This example depicts maze/labyrinth design. I'm not sure what the pattern represents, but typically, the artist creates from nature and daily items. Ready to adorn your favorite blouse, jacket, or often made into pillow covers.
Traditionally worn on Guna women's blouses, around 60's were starting to be sold as panels or patches to tourists.
Molas are hand-made using a reverse appliqué technique. Several layers (usually two to seven) of different-colored cloth (usually cotton) are sewn together; the design is then formed by cutting away parts of each layer. The edges of the layers are then turned under and sewn down. Often, the stitches are nearly invisible. This is achieved by using a thread the same color as the layer being sewn, sewing blind, tiny stitches. The finest molas have extremely fine stitching, made using tiny needles. Each design and panel is unique.
