Vintage hand-painted lacquer peacock box from Kashmir, India. This piece is made of lightweight papier-mâché and finished with a glossy black lacquer exterior adorned with gold hand-drawn feather and scale motifs. The lid lifts off to reveal a smooth black interior.
These Kashmiri lacquer boxes were traditionally made in the 1970s–1980s using the naqashi decorative method, which involves multiple layers of lacquer and fine hand-detailed linework. The sculpted tail and detailed patterning make this an attractive decorative piece for a shelf or tabletop.
