Vintage Jordanian mosaic art depicting the Brazen Serpent (Nehushtan) sculpture in Mount Nebo, Jordan. Acquired from a private estate collection, this handmade artwork features a biblical mosaic of natural stone tiles with the text “Jordan” at the bottom. It is permanently set in a solid wood frame. Large size of 15.25” diameter. Heavy weight (approximately 7 pounds) due to the density of natural stone. Excellent pre-owned condition with light surface wear and natural character to tiles and frame commensurate with age.
Religious Background: In the Hebrew Bible / Old Testament Book of Kings (2 Kings 18:4; written c. 550 BCE), Nehushtan is the name given to the bronze serpent on a pole first described in the Book of Numbers, which God told Moses to erect. A serpentine cross sculpture (the Brazen Serpent Monument) was created by Italian artist Giovanni Fantoni and stands atop Mount Nebo. It is symbolic of the bronze serpent created by Moses in the wilderness.
