Signed Satsuma porcelain sleeping cat figurine represents the nemuri neko ("sleeping cat"), a motif inspired by the Toshogu Shrine in Nikko, symbolizing peace and tranquility. These figurines, originating from Japan's Satsuma region, became popular decorative items, especially during the Meiji and Taishō periods (late 19th and early 20th centuries), featuring intricate hand-painted designs, moriage (raised slip) decoration, and gilding.
They are made from Satsuma earthenware, a fine-grained, ivory-colored ceramic known for its detailed decoration and gilding.
Measures approximately 6” x 3.5”
Aside from ‘crazing’ which is common in vintage porcelain this piece is in perfect condition.
