Vintage Hawaiian Lauhala Woven Lidded Baskets (set of two)
These beautifully crafted baskets feature a tan and green color scheme, perfect for adding a touch of natural elegance to any space. The intricate woven design and decorative bands make them a standout accent piece for your home. Ideal for organizing or simply as a stylish addition to your decor. The beginnings of lauhala weaving are obscure in Hawaiian culture, but the techniques of the craft seem not to have changed much over the years. Lauhala articles recovered from ancient burial caves are nearly identical in design to products made more recently. When Christian missionaries came to Hawaii in 1820 they were amazed to find the Hawaiians in command of such a highly developed craft. From the leaves of the Hala tree, plant which the missionaries at first considered quite worthless. The Hawaiians fashioned wall thatch for their houses, mats that covered their floors and mats to sleep on, window shutters, storage baskets, canoe sails and even loincloths. This is a prized Hawaiian vintage lauhala lidded basket. Baskets that are fashioned like this would take many hours to complete. The lauhala is twisted and woven to form the porcupine like twists which makes this basket so unusual.
