Portland Head, ME, HL 125, hand numbered #4,210 of 5,500, 1st of New England Series, made in Canada, Certificate of Authenticity, tent card
Built in 1790 under the authority of the Massachusetts Legislature (while Maine was still part of the State of Massachusetts), Portland Head was the first lighthouse in Maine and was built at an original cost of $1,500 (equivalent to $42,885 in 2021 dollars).
Captain Joseph Greenleaf was named Keeper and was appointed by President George Washington. He served for two years without pay, his only compensation being fishing and farming rights on the site. He was finally rewarded in his 3rd year with an annual salary of $160 (equivalent to $4,251 in 2021 dollars).
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a native of Portland and a frequent visitor to the lighthouse. His poem “The Lighthouse,” is evidence of his passion for the place.
Portland Head is one of the most famous and often-visited of all the New England lights.
