These bowls are made by Sasak women using clay from the hills above the fishing village of Masbagik, on Lomboc Island, Indonesia. They are made entirely by hand without the use of wheels, burnished with a smooth stone, and then fired in traditional kilns fueled with wood, straw, and rice hulls, The Sasak people have been making pottery in this tradition for hundreds of years.
The hand-made nature of each piece shows in its surface irregularities, varying thickness from piece to piece, and the fire clouds that make no two pieces exactly alike.
These bowls are in vintage used condition, and were recently re-cured in a hot oven with olive oil to restore their original luster. No chips or cracks were found during inspection, but there are scuff marks.
The listing price is for a single bowl, but I have several available, and you can select up to five total. Each one will look somewhat different from the one pictured here, but they are all very similar in size, color, depth, and artistry.
