Vintage Damascene Brooch

This damascene brooch is a Spanish design, specifically a piece of Spanish damascene metalwork, likely from Toledo, Spain. ~ Stamped 925 with a logo. not legible. ~ 1" diameter ~ Trombone clasp ~ Gold and silver wire is embedded into a darkened metallic surface, originated in Damascus and was brought to Spain by the Moors during their occupation. The technique reached a high level of craftsmanship in Spain. ~ Spanish damascene features motifs of birds, flowers, or heraldic symbols, and older pieces may be set into gold-plated base metal with prong settings. ~ The creature depicted is likely a phoenix or griffin.
