A charming, vintage folk art pillow cover in floral red cotton calico fabric, with an appliqued black and white Holstein cow. Although the calico looks like it could be earlier, the cow applique and ruffle hem are zigzag stitched, which makes it most likely from the 1950s, since the Singer Slant-o-Matic, the first home sewing machine that could do zigzag stiches, was released in 1952. And their first ZigZagger attachment came out in '54. There are references to earlier attachments, but this history is too scarce to think they were in common home use before then.
It's in perfect condition, but the abundance of fabric used for the ruffles, and the way they're attached (especially in the top right corner, as shown), it appears to be an early sewing project. Yet the perfect, 1/4" zigzagged hem in the ruffle takes experienced skills. The cow is outlined in hand stitching (you can see on the inside shot). And look close and you'll see there are hand-stitched hearts in the top corners. A lovely gift for any cow collector, or vintage textile collectors. Swell country cottage decor.
