Johnson Lee was born Hung Fei in China in the early 1900’s. He took up brush painting at age 12 but eventually became a lawyer. After World War II, Lee gave up practicing law and took up art again. Instead of a brush, he decided to revive the lost art of painting watercolors using just one finger. Lee gained recognition as he traveled the world showing off his talent and was often billed as “The Last Master Finger Painter”.
In his final years, Lee split his time between travel and his home in Hawaii. This painting was most likely purchased in 1986 when Lee spent time demonstrating his talent at the Fresno County Fair. The watercolor image of bamboo and butterflies measures 6.5 x 7.5 inches by sight and comes double matted. It is protected behind glass in a frame measuring 13 x 15 inches.
