Bode Pl. 15, Sagittarius; Scorpius; Lupus depicts a vast astronomical landscape occupied by various mythological figures and mythical creatures representing constellations. About Johann Elert Bode Johann Elert Bode was a German astronomer and mathematician who made significant contributions to the field of celestial mechanics and the popularization of astronomy. While still a young man, Bode independently co-discovered the comets of 1769 and 1770. Likewise, he is credited for Bode’s law, also called the Titius-Bode Law, which is used to determine planetary distances. In addition to his contributions to science, Bode published Uranographia sive Astrorum Descriptio…(1797—1801) which is the largest celestial star map ever produced and the last of the great star atlases of the Golden Age of the Celestial Atlas. This celestial map synthesizes the work of over 100 astronomers from the preceding 200 years and beautifully renders the constellations in the context of the night sky.
