The glasses are Edo Kirikocobalt blue and feature a "cut to clear" technique, where the outer blue layer is cut away to reveal the clear glass underneath. Often described as small sake, cold tea, or whiskey glasses/tumblers.
The craftsmanship is known for creating a magical play of light and shadow.
Craftsmanship: The term Kiriko means "cut glass". Traditional Edo Kiriko uses a technique where a thin colored layer is fused over a clear base, and artisans then hand-cut intricate patterns to reveal the transparent layer beneath, creating a striking contrast.
Origin: The craft originated in Edo (old Tokyo) around the 1830s and was later designated a Traditional Japanese Craft.
Patterns: The specific patterns visible, such as the cross-hatch (basket weave) and starburst designs, are common traditional Japanese motifs used in this type of glassware.
These are beautiful and vintage pieces. The insides are clean with no issues. There are no chips or cracks.
The one on the left has a flaw from manufacturing I believe as there is a small air bubble as seen in Picture 6 at the top close to the rim of the glass. This does not affect the presentation nor the use of the piece.
The one on the right I see two smalls dots towards the rim of the glass. I don't know what they are but I believe they are in the glass. They do not affect the presentation nor the use of the piece.
Stunning pieces for the holidays.
