Vintage Ambassador West Chicago Hotel Dinner Plates (6)

I purchased six plates around 2002 at an auction of items from the historic Ambassador West Hotel, held prior to its conversion into luxury condominiums in Chicago’s Gold Coast. The heavy plates feature the monogram AW, are 10 inches wide and 1/4 inch thick. The gold rim has a few small scratches. See photos. The plates give a view into the "toddling town" and its Jazz Age. The Ambassador West, along with its sister property the Ambassador East, opened almost a century ago. The Ambassador West’s Guildhall was renowned for hosting remarkable weddings and celebrity-attended banquets (including Queen Elizabeth II).The Ambassador East was home to the iconic Pump Room, a preferred dining venue for countless Hollywood icons: Frank Sinatra, Elizabeth Taylor, John Belushi, Paul Newman, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, among others. An underground passageway linked the hotels' basements and rumor has it that a certain President would hide his mistress in the Ambassador West while he was staying at the Ambassador East.
