Collectible vintage air mail stamp featuring an airplane design. Red color with 5 cent denomination.
5-cent U.S. Air Mail stamp featuring a DC-4 Skymaster airplane.
• This stamp, identified as Scott C33, was issued on March 26, 1947. o
• It was released to reflect a reduced domestic airmail rate from 8 cents to 5 cents per ounce, effective October 1, 1946.
• The 5-cent rate also applied to airmail sent to and from U.S. territories like Hawaii, Guam, and the Canal Zone, significantly reducing costs for many.
• The smaller size of this stamp, compared to previous airmail issues, was a cost-saving measure, allowing for more stamps per printing plate. *
• This particular issue was known as the
"Nickel Air Mail Stamp" and was promoted during National Air Mail Week.
This stamp is a misprint - note how it isn’t centered properly. Misprints are valued among collectors.
