Vintage African “Bahule Spirit Totem” For Protection & Prosperity Of Herds. We don’t know a lot about this other than what is attached to the back which appears to be original to the totem. Based on items it was found with it may date to the 1960s or 70s and was likely from Africa, possibly Zimbabwe. Very interesting piece! It’s made from hand carved and hand painted wood that is very very light . The clothing on this totem is made from what looks like woven straw, and is very well done. Additionally, the mane that surrounds the face looks like it is a natural fiber, not man-made. There are small nails that hold it in place. What strikes us most about this piece is how much care has gone into it. This is not something that would’ve been thrown together in a few hours for a tourist.
