Vintage 48T DONEGAL Tweed Wool Blue Blazer Sport Coat Jacket Bespoke Ireland

Vintage (1960s?) Donegal Tweed Sport Coat in size 48L (or XL) in excellent condition. Do clothes speak? I think this jacket tells a story. This was a bespoke coat made in Ireland, so there are no size tags. Based on the chest, sleeve, and length measurements, it is closest to a 48L. Pit to pit 25 in = a 50 in chest = a US 48. Sleeve from shoulder to cuff 26.5" and length from top of collar to hem is 33 1/2 (sometimes called Long and sometimes extra long, depending on the maker.) Donegal tweed is made in northwest Ireland from wool that is hand-spun and hand-woven with small flecks of different colors woven together. The colors were traditionally dyed with local plants like blackberry and moss and this one reads gray blue but you can see the flecks of red up close. Hallmarks of quality and history include the melton wool undercollar and the four inner pockets. The idea (before men carried bags) was for a gentleman to have all his gear without distorting the clean lines of the jacket. This one has different-sized pockets for a wallet, spectacles, a pen, coins, and perhaps a small flask of Irish whiskey. It is fully lined, too. When I found it, there was a vintage cotton handkerchief in the pocket, so that comes with the jacket. (It's white with a border in different shades of blue). It shows no signs of wear, but one of the buttons got dinged in the wardrobe (see photo). This is your chance to own a truly one-of-a-kind sport coat with a sterling heritage.
