Hi. This is a nice bracelet. Unfortunately, it is not by Fred Davis. Not quite up to his quality. Fred Davis NEVER showed hinges, as this bracelet does. Moreover, his pieces are ALWAYS signed. The hallmarks on this bracelet are common to many found in Mexico in the 1930's and until eagle marks began in the 40's. Finally, for your information, Fred Davis never had a "studio." Like Los Ballesteros, he worked with individual silversmiths who stamped upon acceptance of the piece. Good luck!

@cbconard Thanks for your feedback. unsigned pieces can be so tricky. I'll adjust the description accordingly..... Hopefully the HA piece is OK?

Of course it is... although 1. The Hector bracelet probably isn't quite as old as you think it is. These marks are from 1948 - 62, so chances are it's from the 50's, not the 40's. And 2. For my money, I wouldn't describe Aguilar as Taxco's premier silversmith. Fred Davis was the first, really. Spratling by far the most renown and started IT ALL. And Pineda's work is probably the best designed/crafted. I'd put HA at about number 4. Cheers!

@cbconard Yes...Spratling for sure... I like Castillo and his wife Margot... but as long as we're in the top 5.. which is which is subjective... I've seen later issues of the HA piece and they were all 925... I thought this might be mid-late 40's due to the 940... still a little guess work involved... Thanks for the input!

@cbconard I thought Fred Davis wasn't part of the Tasco group... didn't he work from Mexico City?

940 is silver content and they all played around with it to make it more impressive. Spratling went to 980 and got into trouble when it didn't test out that high. So he signed Spratling Silver after that. HA!

Fred Davis had already been here (I live in Mexico) for many years before Spratling. He was a gay man from a good family in Chicago. He started selling silver at train stations and ended up running silver for Sanborns. Spratling copied Davis's lifestyle... producing silver, selling pre-Columbian artifacts, etc. Davis introduced Spratling to Taxco. Spratling brokered the sale of Davis's home in Cuernavaca to the Morrows; inlaws of Charles Lindbergh.

I imagine the two were involved romantically at one time, as it seems there was a falling out, or at least a distancing, between them later on.

@cbconard They were all master craftsmen and premium designers... all the work from that period is beautiful... nice chatting with someone more knowledgeable than I... Have a great day and stay safe!

Thanks. Look up Jean Puiforcat, the French silversmith. He fled Europe for WWII. Set up a studio in Mexico City in 1942. Spratling copied many of his designs. In 1945, right after the war ended, he returned to France and abruptly died, probably was murdered. There are a lot of odd stories like this, with connections we will never know.
